191st General Conference

As April 2021 general conference comes to a close, members around the world have been edified and uplifted by the words of Church leaders. Here are 6 announcements that happened during this spring's general conference. [1]

In the Sunday afternoon session, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct 20 new temples. According to Newsroom, “this is the second-highest number of temples announced at one time in the history of the Church. At the April 1998 general conference, former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008) announced plans to construct as many as 32 new temples, though he did not list specific locations.” See the locations announced by President Nelson here.

  • A New Primary General Presidency

In the Saturday afternoon session, a new Primary General Presidency was called. Sister Camille N. Johnson will now serve as Primary General President with Sister Susan H. Porter as First Counselor and Sister Amy Wright as Second Counselor. Find their bios here.

  • New Members of the Presidency of the Seventy Announced

Effective August 1, 2021, Elders Robert C. Gay and Terence M. Vinson will be released from the Presidency of the Seventy. Elders Paul V. Johnson and S. Mark Palmer were sustained as new members of the Presidency of the Seventy during the Saturday afternoon session.

  • 8 General Authority Seventies Called

Eight new General Authority Seventies received calls during the Saturday afternoon session: Elder Sean Douglas, Elder Michael A. Dunn, Elder Clark G. Gilbert, Elder Patricio M. Giuffra, Elder Alfred Kyungu, Elder Alvin F. Meredith III, Elder Carlos G. Revillo Jr., Elder Vaiangina Sikahema. Read short bios about each new General Authority Seventy.

  • 77 New Area Seventies

Elder D. Todd Christofferson read the names of 77 new Area Seventies during the Thursday general conference leadership meeting. Short bios of each new Area Seventy are available here. President Dallin H. Oaks called for a sustaining vote of the new Area Seventies during the Saturday afternoon session.

  • The 2020 Statistical Report

Like many aspects of last year, the statistical report is a bit different from previous years as numbers reflect decreases in new converts and full-time missionaries. Membership increased by just under 100,000, putting total Church membership at 16,663,663. See the full statistical report.

20 New Temples Announced April 2021

A resilient, far-reaching moment of Latter-day Saint history was made on Easter Sunday with President Russell M. Nelson’s announcement of 20 future temples — the most locations announced in a single day since April 1998.

At the conclusion of Sunday afternoon’s session of the 191st Annual General Conference, the Church president set forth plans to build temples in:

  • 01-May-2021 : New Temple announced for Ephraim Utah Temple- 27th temple proposed for Utah made in special Manti region press conference.
  • May 2, 2021 = Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults
  • 24-May-2021 : Church to discontinue time-only temple marriages - The discontinuance was addressed in a Monday, May 24, letter from the First Presidency to General Authorities; General Officers; Area Seventies; stake, mission, district and temple presidents; and bishops and branch presidents.[2]
  • 24-May-2021 : 3 of 10 Church MTC's to resume in-person learning in June - In a phased and cautious approach that adds on-site training to its online teaching, the Provo, Ghana and New Zealand MTCs look to invite a small number of missionaries to train on location beginning in late June. [3]

  • July 3 : 27th Annual Parley P Pratt Freedom Run - Over 600 celebrate the day Elder Pratt and 2 companions escaped prison in Columbia, Missouri. [4]
  • July 22 and 23, 2021 - Music for a Summer Evening (Pioneer Day Commemoration)
  • July 22 : Two missionaries die in New Mexico collision; third is hospitalized - Elder Michael Austin Davis, 20, of Corinne, Utah, and Elder Tyson Gene Haycock, 20, of Miles City, Montana, both passed away as the result of injuries sustained in the accident. [5]

  • Aug 1 : 66 Area Authority Seventies to Released effective Aug 1st -
  • Aug 31: St. George Church Arson Fires - three separate arson fires damaged meetinghouses for The Church. Police find and arrest prime suspect after a brief car chase that ended near Zion National Park.[6]
  • Aug 31: Latter-day Saints in the Paralympics, days 6 & 7: Gold in swimming, plus updates in goalball, track and shot put - When Tupou Neiufi was just 2 years old, she was injured by a hit-and-run driver. [7][8]

  • Sep 03: First girls to earn Vanguard Light & Truth Award - Vanguard International Scouting Association is proud to recognize the first two girls to earn the new Light and Truth Award. Elizabeth K. age 9 from Buckley WA, Chief Seattle Council, and Emma D. age 10 from Richmond UT, Crossroads of the West Council, both completed the award requirements this summer.

  • 03-Mar: Elder Fernando Antonio Ramos Garcia - young missionary serving in the El Salvador San Salvador West/Belize Mission. From Juayúa, El Salvador, died on Wednesday after drowning in a river in the municipality of Nahulingo, Sonsonate San Salvador.
  • 09-Mar: Giovanni Pelin Pangan - 48-year-old mission president in the Philippines Iloilo Mission died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He previously served in his homeland as president of the Legazpi Philippines Stake.[9]

May

  • 18-May : Two missionaries in Texas die in car crash - Elders Luke Carter of Springville Utah and Eli Fowler of Pueblo West Colorado, die in a two-vehicle accident north of Dallas-Fort Worth during a heavy rainstorm. The driver of the other vehicle is hospitalized in serious condition. [10]

August

  • 31-Aug : Elder Dean L. Davies of the Seventy passes away at his home in North Salt Lake, after an extended battle with cancer.[11] Elder Davies was called to be a General Authority Seventy at the October 2020 general conference. Prior to that, he served as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric for eight years (2012 to 2015 as Second Counselor and 2015 to 2020 as First Counselor). His 70th birthday would have been observed in just 4 days, and he would have been inclded among 6 others who are anticipated to be granted emeritus status in General Conference next month.
